Community projects

People like you and me get up, initiate and act – develop a community, turn vision into reality
מפגש יזמים ראשון שנת פעילות 2016

The community division of The Partnership aims to create a regional identity, a feeling of community and a network of collaborations, in order to encourage commitment to action that promotes a sustainable region.

We, at The Partnership for Regional Sustainability, believe that local human assets, culture and knowledge are the key to motivation and to social, environmental and economic growth, that effective utilization of strengths and resources existing at the local scale will turn the community into an active, initiating partner that is involved even at the scale of decision making with regards to the region’s future, and at the same time will act as “glue” to connect between people.

The model that we chose for motivating community entrepreneurship is based on the principle of calls for proposals. This is a platform that allows residents to realize their dreams for changing the environment they live in, and thus satisfies the desire to expand action, while turning the community into an active, initiating partner.

Do you have an idea? Do you think it promotes the vision of The Partnership? Tell us and we will help you turn it into reality.

You are welcome to contact Tamar Arbel Elisha, director of the community division of ‘The Partnership for Regional Sustainability’.

Nir lane
משעול ניר

The children and parents of the Founders preschool in Zikhron Ya’akov are developing a public walking trail in the spirit of edible forests and Mediterranean gardening. The aim of the project is to involve and include the neighbors and the local community in the ongoing gardening and maintenance and thus connect them to values of sustainability in management and to love nature and working the land. A further aim is to strengthen the involvement of the family of the soldier Nir Barzasky (z”l) after whom the trail is named. A partner in driving this project forward is the department of environmental quality in the Zikhron Ya’akov local council. As part of the project, an environmental program that supports the gardening activity is being assimilated in preschools, in which children from other preschools are invited to experience working the land on site.

To work it and to preserve it
לעבדה ולשמרה

A group of women from Ramat Zvi, an ultra-orthodox neighborhood of Zikhron Ya’akov, is establishing a community garden while raising awareness for beautifying the area and becoming familiar with the principles of sustainable gardening. The garden is being established on a neglected public space, between houses, with the aim of turning it into a growing, blooming, well-kept area. A partner in driving this project forward is the department of environmental quality in the Zikhron Ya’akov local council.

Within the framework of this project, the women run an agricultural training program for residents of the neighborhood. The course content and work in the field are based on the principles of organic gardening and in accordance with halachic principles.

The aim of this project is to involve the local community in establishing the garden, in practice, while motivating for long-term maintenance and care; this is done by means of meetings and community events.

When constructing the flowerbeds/vegetable patches, emphasis is placed on sustainability values in general, and on saving water and reusing materials, in particular.

The hope is to initiate processes of assimilating agricultural education and values of amazement and sustainability in ultra-orthodox education, and to cause as many residents as possible to actively participate in looking after open spaces in their neighborhood.

Development of the Gibor River channel
ערוץ נחל גיבור

In the Neve Sharet neighborhood of Zikhron Ya’akov there is a green strip that is neglected and abandoned – the outcome of a high voltage power line that was dismantled, while construction in the channel below was forbidden for many years. Nature and humans exist side by side in this area. The rocks, the native animals and plants, exist side by side with plants that escape from cultivation to the wild, garbage and neglect.

This project aims to create a park that integrates sustainability values: environment, society, and a vision of a green future. Within this framework it is planned to regularize this strip as a local nature park for the residents of the neighborhood, hikers and pedestrians, which will connect the residential neighborhood to the natural woodland to its south, while creating a continuum of green spaces, including the Gibor Site in the northern section, the seasonal channel that drains the residential neighborhood in the middle section, and the sewage pumping station in the southern section of the said strip. In this way, a natural, sustainable, local green lung will be created. This green lung will provide a high-quality area for culture and leisure activities for the benefit of the residents and it will become a center of attraction for the sharing, supportive and caring community.

Besides regularizing the flow and rehabilitating the vegetation, a walking trail will be established along the length of the channel, ecological benches will be installed, a hidden observation deck will be built for observing animals and birds, drinking points for animals will be set up; other features at the site will be a winter pool, nesting boxes, an insect hive, garbage cans, appropriate signage and integration of environmental art.

Likewise, there are plans to upgrade the nearby recycling station by establishing creative corners, environmental education, a station for swapping used books, and creation of a space for environmental art.

For the “Gibor” site, where there is a soccer/basketball court, the plans include planting an edible forest, playground and sports equipment, a pump track area, benches, water fountains, gardens, and signs explaining about the history of the site.

Residents from the neighborhood are volunteering and participating in the site’s establishment, development, supervision and ongoing maintenance; all this is with the partnership and support of the Zikhron Ya’akov local council.

Wildflowers
פרחי בר

Residents of Binyamina – Givat Ada are adopting sections of roads near their homes, in which they are sowing wildflowers. The project operates in partnership with the gardening department of the local council and the Binyamina – Givat Ada community center. The plants being sown are wild plants from the region that support the ecosystem. The project thus encourages sustainable gardening without additional irrigation and without over-maintenance. From time to time the activists hold meetings, during which they share their experiences, enrich their knowledge about sustainable gardening, and even swap seeds.

This project aims to improve the appearance of the communities, with minimum investment in resources, and maximum consideration for the environment, to raise residents’ awareness about sustainability, and to strengthen local feelings of community.

Heritage trees
עצי מורשת

This project involves mapping of ancient trees using an online form, adding historical data from the archive. Groups of people from the community, including students and the elderly, go out on guided tours around the town and together they map ancient trees. Meeting with the elderly residents exposes heritage stories about the trees, and these are documented in the system. The system also enables individual volunteers to join the mapping and documentation effort. The information is used, among other things, for monitoring the state of health of the trees, and when necessary, for treating them. The project operates in partnership with the Dorot voluntary association for preserving the heritage of Givat Ada.

Fruit without flies
מלכודת לזבוב הפירות

The Mediterranean fruit fly is currently one of the most important and threatening pests to agriculture in Israel. In the not too distant past, intensive pest control methods were used to prevent its damage and expansion, but their usefulness in eradicating the pest in orchards was limited, therefore it was performed frequently. Today it is clear that the amount of pest control chemicals may be significantly reduced through two simple actions: installing baited traps in orchards and making sure to gather up and remove rotten fruit that fall on the ground. These actions will be effective only if they are performed in the vicinity of all the fruit trees in the rural settlements, including private yards. In addition, in the towns and private yards where there is no regular action against the fly, most of the fruit is damaged and inedible. There are many people among us who grow fruit trees for their own enjoyment in their yards, but they themselves never benefit from the fruit because it rots while still on the trees.
The vision of this project is to reduce fruit fly damage through cooperation and mutual assistance between farmers and the community.
In order to raise awareness of this issue, an information campaign for the community is taking place, led by young change agents, and unique educational activities are being run at the Rivka Aaronsohn Agricultural Farm in Zikhron Ya’akov.
